A Vintage BMX part designed to make your new Skyway Graphite Tuff Wheels look like the original generation 1 Graphite Tuffs from the early 1980's.

Origin: Kool Caps were born from a "what if" discussion on a Vintage BMX thread. The idea was to make a set of brand new Skyway Graphite Tuff Wheels look like a set of original first generation Graphite Tuff Wheels with Campagnolo  hubs.

Name: The name Kool Caps was spawned from the original Skyway Tuff II coaster brake hubs. The metal flanges were originally used to dissipate heat on older coaster brake Tuff Wheels. The metal flanged coaster brake hubs were called "Kool Hubs". So the name "Kool Caps" was a natural transition, since all the metal flanged hubs were all descendants of the Kool Hub, this makes them a final descendant of sorts.

Build: The original Kool Caps were machined using "Old School" methods of machining, and they were a fun project. Now the Kool Caps are being made using more modern machining techniques.

Kool Caps are not a high volume item. Never the less, the original hand machined items had far more demand than supply. They simply took too long to make to make them truly viable, but the fun factor made them all worth while.

   Since then, by evolving, and using more modern machining techniques, I was able to produce them in sufficient numbers to keep some in stock. Current production capabilities, happily, can now exceed demand, and thus, I will not run out of supply, as I have in the past.

  The pricing will never match a mass produced item's pricing scale, but they are still truly a "For Fun" item, at a "For Fun" price.

Installation: The installation of the Kool Caps couldn't be easier. Simply apply a small amount of pure 100% Silicone adhesive to the flange area. Clear or black seems to work best. You don't need very much, so use it sparingly, and remove any excess that might squeeze out. Aquarium sealant is a good choice to use.

Silicone will not harm the wheels or hubs, and can be removed later if need be. It holds the Kool Caps on VERY tightly, and they should not come loose under any riding conditions.

Simply press them into place, and carefully align them to the rims, and allow them to dry over night.

Surface finish: The original Kool Caps came in a Matte finish.

The latest generation of Kool Caps have all been bright dipped. They all have a shiny gold anodized finish on them which matches the gold convertible hubs, and a matte finish on the rivets. However, if a matte finish is desired on both the hubs and the caps, you can easily give the Kool Caps and the hubs a matte finish by using some flat clear paint on them. Likewise, if you want a polished stainless steel look on the rivets, they can be polished up very easily.

Any good aluminum polish will work fine on them, along with a "Dremel Moto-Tool" and a small buffing wheel will work great for polishing the rivets.
